Here at Roots we feel that taking care of yourself is a journey of discovery and self commitment. We also know that the we all love to eat and the types of food we eat underpins how we feel on every level. Food and lifestyle affects our physical, emotional and sometimes our spiritual wellbeing. We also understand that using different modalities is powerful for the healing of our bodies, yet is appears to be in human nature difficult for people to be consistent when taking care of themselves. This is influenced by many factors three of which may be long held beliefs, lack of confidence and not knowing where the solutions are.
Roots of Wellness cooking retreats all have a holistic application, while we focus on teaching about plant based cooking, fermenting, dehydration and often raw recipes we also bring in other practices. Steve enjoys creating desserts that are both delicious and healthy, because giving up a sweet tooth was never an option! He is known for his cheesecakes that contain no cheese, cream, or refined sugar, and now we are excited to have them as part of our live demo during the retreat having been asked many times to share his unique recipes.
At “Roots”, we encourage people to think healthy and think dessert, proving that these two ideas really can go hand in hand. The journey for Steve toward a healthier lifestyle began alongside Jennie, following her cancer diagnosis in 2016. That experience sparked a lasting change in how we live, eat, and think about wellbeing.
As an engineer, he brings the same mindset into his dessert-making as he does his work. He takes a concept, refines it, and makes it his own, to create results that bring joy to others.
Of course, all of our courses go far beyond desserts. Wellness is about nurturing the whole self through many different practices, and Roots of Wellness was always meant to be a collaborative space, working together with other holistic healthcare practitioners to inspire lasting wellbeing.

So glad I made the effort to spend a weekend with Jenny and Steve. Their home allows a spacious, warm and comfortable base for a healthy and healing weekend. For me the best part ( apart from the beautiful company, which of course may be different each time) was the opportunity to observe how different meals and snacks were made right in front of us so you have chance to see you can do that when you get home so it’s a double learning experience and/or reminder. My only complaint is can we have more hours in the day next time!

What a wonderful way to celebrate a milestone with my friends, at the home of Steve and Jennie, who prepared an inventive, varied and extremely tasty organic plant based menu right before our eyes, giving us the opportunity to "look behind the curtain" and see how it's done. The accommodation was excellent, beautifully scented, with comfortable beds upstairs and spacious sofas downstairs. It was the perfect space to unwind with friends, explore the Essex countryside and coast and share a truly magical experience with our perfect hosts, Steve and Jennie. Thank you so much.
